Youth care is available on non-holiday weekends for children over 5 years of age on non-First Day School Sundays (usually the 2nd, 4th and 5th Sundays of a month) during Meeting for Worship. We seek a core group who could volunteer three or four times per year. Volunteers pair with a paid childcare provider to supervise play for a group either under 5 or 5+. This is an opportunity to get to know our wonderful children and support their parents during Worship. Crafts and game activities are provided. You can sign up via signup genius:

Childcare is available on non-holiday weekends from 10:45 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. for children under 5 years of age. Paid caregivers will provide this service.

Please note that all children must be signed in and signed out at the child care room by their parent or caregiver. For new and visiting families, parents will be asked to fill out a very short registration form. The BFM Youth Safety Policy requires that all young people (infant to 18 years old) must be supervised by a parent, teachers, or child care staff at all times.

Support Ramallah at Potluck Plus! (April 19, 2026)

Potluck + for Ramallah Friends Campaign: Please join us on Sunday, April 19 at 12:15 p.m. It's our annual potluck lunch to support Ramallah Friends School (RFS). This is a troubled time. How can BFM Friends support the school in the midst of turmoil? RFS costs have risen, more student financial aid is needed for parents who do not have jobs, and students rely on the school's stability.

Can you give generously to our RFS fundraiser? (bring a check for our donation box or donate here.) Traditionally, BFM has supported several student scholarships.
Can you bring a dish for our potluck lunch in the Groome building? (Drop it off at 10:30 to be heated or kept cool; include an ingredients list.) Include a note of dietetic concerns (contains nuts, Vegan, Gluten-free, etc.). You can find our favorite, easy mid-East recipes at this link.
Can you buy items to benefit the school? Choose from Palestinian olive oil, a Ramallah Friends t-shirt, books, and BFM mugs, totes, or magnets.

Comparative Religions: Sacred Texts of the World (April 21, 2026)

Sept 2025 through May 2026, the Comparative Religions class will discuss a 36-week lecture survey of Sacred Texts from around the world and through history. The course is taught by Professor Grant Hardy through The Great Courses.

We meet weekly on Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom for a half-hour video lecture followed by a half-hour open discussion.

--Humanity's library of sacred writings is a huge canon that includes many of the most influential books ever written (such as the Hebrew and Christian bibles and the Quran of Islam, as well as sacred writings such as the Hindu Vedas, the Buddhist Sutras, Daoism's Daodejing, the Analects of Confucius, Zoroastrianism, Jainism, and Baha'i. This course takes you into the body of sacred writings that have played a fundamental role in human culture and history, including the scriptures of seven major religions and nine smaller faiths, such as the ancient Egyptian and Mayan societies.

Representatives of BFM committees meet the week before Meeting for Business to discuss the upcoming Business agenda. How do we quiet our minds enough to hear the still, small voice within us? How might we deepen our experience of meeting for worship? Experiment with Light is a meditative and centering practice based upon Rex Ambler’s book Light to Live By, which describes early Quaker meditative habits and translates them into a highly accessible process of clearness and understanding. All are welcome to attend. First-time participants find the process quite easy to follow and often richly rewarding.

On the fourth Sundays, the session is by Zoom only, starting at 7:30 p.m.
People can listen to the prompts on their own in their own homes.

BYM Spring Spiritual Formation Retreat

Friday, May 1 at 4:00 through Sunday, May 3 at 1:00 pm

Shepherd's Spring Retreat Center, 16869 Taylors Landing Rd, Sharpsburg, MD 21782

The retreat will begin with supper on Friday, May 1, followed by an opening circle. There will be two sessions on Saturday (morning and afternoon) with an evening of festive fellowship and singing. Sunday morning session will be followed by Meeting for Worship and lunch.
Registration is now open, and closes on Monday, April 13.
Low-cost camping option is available as well as scholarship funds.
Retreat participants will receive a detailed welcome email and pre-retreat exercise about one week before the retreat. If you have questions as the retreat nears, please contact the program registrar, Amy Schmaljohn at amy@schmaljohn.com.
Spiritual nurture funds are available through both local Meetings and through the Yearly Meeting. The retreat welcomes all of us who seek a deeper life in and with Spirit.

Join us after meeting for worship on May 3 for a talk with Traci Hjelt Sullivan, Executive Director of Right Sharing of World Resources, for a discussion of The Power of Enough. How can I balance my use of time, energy, money, and “things,” to free myself to meaningful work (God’s work) and to contribute to right order in our world?

The Power of Enough workshop invites participants through queries and experiential exercises to let Spirit in and find that place where Enough is actually an abundant life for each of us.
Grounding ourselves in Love, Friends of all ages will be both a window and a door for each other as they share their own stories or experiences, reflecting together as individuals and as a community.

Answering the Call to Radical Faithfulness (May 10, 2026)

Please join us at our April ARE event: “Answering the Call to Radical Faithfulness: A supportive discussion on how our spirituality is supporting and guiding us through these times."

This session will take place in Groome 211 at 9:00 a.m. on May 10.

Several times over the last several months, Bethesda Friends have gathered to share what we are doing in response to the ongoing political horrors in our country and world. The Adult Religious Education Coordinators invite you to continue on this theme with specific attention to how Quaker faith and practice guides and supports our actions through these times.

Starting with Steve Chase’s wonderful Pendle Hill Pamphlet, “Revelation and Revolution: Answering the Call to Radical Faithfulness,” we will offer queries that invite deeper sharing about what it means to each of us to show up in the world as Quakers (or as ones influenced by Quakerism) through these times.
Reading the pamphlet in advance is highly encouraged but not mandatory. There will be a brief overview of its contents near the beginning of the session.

Potluck Lunch (May 17, 2026)

All are invited to attend Potluck in the Groome Building following the Rise of Meeting (about 12:15 on the 3rd Sundays Sept-May). Each month a different committee will host the potluck. Please join old friends and make new ones. All are welcome. To warm food or keep it cool, bring it to the Groome Building kitchen staff from 10:30 onwards.

Bring a simple salad, fruits, main dish, or dessert if you think of it. If not, come anyway: potlucks never run out of food.
Please label any dishes you bring and include info that might be critical to some (non-vegan, contains nuts, gluten-free, etc.).
The potluck in April is tentatively scheduled as the Ramallah Friends School spring fling campaign.

The aim is to foster deeper connections and strengthen our community's ability to engage in difficult conversations in a safe and intimate setting.
We are bringing together small groups of Friends that will meet during our monthly potlucks with this essential goal: to enhance our skills in dialogue and deepen our relationships as a Meeting.
By creating an intimate space, Friends can deepen relationships and strengthen the sense of community while practicing and applying essential conversation skills.

The Comparative Religions group is holding a twelve-session course, June-August, on Tuesdays from 7-8 p.m. It is an 30 minute online lecture survey of historical materials using The Great Courses, followed by an open discussion.

ARE invites us to join Ann Procter on 12:30 on Sunday, June 7, to meet her friend and colleague, Morgan Cooper Totah, who will be visiting from Ramallah. For more than two decades Morgan has lived in Ramallah with her husband Saleh Totah whose family is among the founding families of the city of Ramallah.

Morgan will share what life is like for her, Saleh, and their children in Occupied Palestine.
Morgan’s social enterprise, Handmade Palestine, works with artisan groups across the West Bank – and, at one time, in Gaza – to bring their handicrafts to international markets.
