Juneteenth Youth Sports Clinics (June 16, 2026)

BFM supports the Scotland Community of Potomac and their Annual Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival (https://www.juneteenthscotland.org/schedule-of-events-2026), which focuses on the celebration of the historic Black communities of Montgomery County. The 2026 Festival will have events across the County from June 13-19.

● Opening night on Saturday June 13, 7-9 p.m., includes a performance by Grammy Award winning gospel singer Hezekiah Walker along with his Love Fellowship Choir at the Bethesda Theater.

● Worship with Scotland A.M.E. Zion Church at 12:45 p.m. on Sunday, June 14.

● Experience the Interfaith Comedy Show from 6-8:30 p.m. on Monday, June 15 at the Blackrock Center for the Arts.

● Youth clinics in football, cheer, and basketball are available June 16 - 18

● Friday, June 19, is an all-day celebration, mostly in Cabin John Village or Park, with a 5-K run, a community wellness and social action Expo, a children’s carnival, a journey through history at the renovated Scotland A.M.E. Zion Church in Potomac, food, a baseball classic, and evening fireworks.

Founded in 1880 by William Dove, a formerly enslaved farm worker who was the first Black man to own land in Potomac, Scotland was once an enclave of more than 500 acres along Seven Locks Road. The community’s only remaining historic structure, the Scotland African Methodist Episcopal Zion church, has been renovated after a catastrophic flood in 2019. Today, the Scotland community consists of 100 townhouses on 10 acres on Scotland Drive, just off Seven Locks Road. Twenty-five of these homes are still owned by descendants of the original founders of the community.

Youth Care: We seek a core group who can volunteer three or four times per year with a paid childcare provider to supervise kid's summer play. Please note that all children must be signed in and signed out at the child care room by their parent or caregiver. For new and visiting families, parents will be asked to fill out a very short registration form. How do we quiet our minds enough to hear the still, small voice within us? How might we deepen our experience of meeting for worship? Experiment with Light is a meditative and centering practice based upon Rex Ambler’s book Light to Live By, which describes early Quaker meditative habits and translates them into a highly accessible process of clearness and understanding. All are welcome to attend. First-time participants find the process quite easy to follow and often richly rewarding.

On the fourth Sundays, the session is by Zoom only, starting at 7:30 p.m.
People can listen to the prompts on their own in their own homes.

We read a mix of books by Quakers, books about Quakerism, and books that speak to Quaker values and concerns. The group is invited to share announcements, summaries, and ideas about the readings through an online mailing list.

Travel Experiences in the South and Abroad

Carolina Friends School invites BFM friends and attenders to join other thoughtful adult F/friends in upcoming transformational travel learning. Based in Durham, NC the school opened in 1964 as one of the South's first intentionally racially integrated schools.

Upcoming opportunities organized by the school include “The Quaker Journey” that explores the early history of Quakerism, retracing the steps of George Fox and Margaret Fell, in the beautiful Lake District of northern England.

The annual BFM Christmas Pageant will be held at the rise of meeting (noon). This wonderful holiday tradition features performances by our First Day School students and a visiting orchestra. Religious Education will also host a toy drive. Please join in our efforts by bringing unwrapped toys, games, or books to the Pageant to be distributed to children in need.

Refreshments will follow the Christmas Program, and the Fellowship & Hospitality committee would greatly appreciate your contributions! We are expecting a large turnout, so savory finger foods, holiday cookies, and other snacks will be warmly welcomed. Please bring your offerings to the Groome building by 11am on December 13.

Since we will not have access to the kitchen, please prepare food at home to be in ready-to-serve, bite-sized portions. For ease of setup, square & rectangular serving containers work best, as table space will be limited. We have some trays available to rearrange the food if needed. Fellowship & Hospitality also welcomes help with setting up the food and beverages.

Candlelight Meeting for Worship on Wednesday, December 16 at 8:00 p.m. The candlelight service offers a wonderful respite from the holiday rush and to meditate peacefully among friends. You may attend in person at the Sidwell Friends Lower School Meeting House in Bethesda, MD or via Zoom (use our contact us form to request the Zoom link). For those on zoom, please let only a soft candle light your room (if you have lamps lit, the bright light overpowers the dark meetinghouse)...and thus we can all share in the sense of candlelight together.
