Quaker Shenanigans: White Supremacy Culture in Business Meeting Workshop, March 7 - 10:00 am to Noon
How can we know when we are caught up in the ways of our dominant culture and when we are being true to the Spirit in our Friends processes? In this workshop sponsored by BYM Reparations Action Working Group, we will disentangle Quaker business practices grounded in foundational spiritual principles from those that reflect White, middle-class, college-educated cultural norms.

Michael Levi and Jade Eaton, both members of Adelphi Friends Meeting, will facilitate this workshop, which is based on a much longer workshop that they presented last year through FGC.  Jade and Michael have both served as clerk of Adelphi, of the Board of Trustees of Friends Community School, and a variety of committees. They find Business Meeting vital to the health of monthly meetings and the Religious Society of Friends.

On Sunday, March 8 at 12:30 in the Meeting House after worship, the Peace and Social Justice Committee invites you to a Gender Spectrum Worship Sharing and Discussion. This is an empathy-based, query-driven session designed to help participants understand the experience of being a gender and sexual minority and to better appreciate what these individuals might need from the community. In these times of polarization and sensitivity, we hope to create a safe space to allow people to ask questions, stumble, and be wrong where they will not be judged.

    • This event supports our ongoing “commit[ment] to deepening our understanding… of trans, nonbinary, and gender expansive individuals and communities,” as stated in our Minute from July 2025 (see https://www.bethesdafriends.org/Belief-Statements-(Minutes).
    • It will be led by Danielle Carnes, a member of Friends Meeting of Washington who served with the U.S. Agency for International Development from 2016 to July 2025. She has worked to improve the lives of trans people around the world and to help advance understanding of empathy and gender diverse communities.

All are invited to attend Potluck in the Groome Building following the Rise of Meeting (about 12:15 on the 3rd Sundays Sept-May). Each month a different committee will host the potluck. Please join old friends and make new ones. All are welcome. To warm food or keep it cool, bring it to the Groome Building kitchen staff from 10:30 onwards.

    • Bring a simple salad, fruits, main dish, or dessert if you think of it. If not, come anyway: potlucks never run out of food.
    • Please label any dishes you bring and include info that might be critical to some (non-vegan, contains nuts, gluten-free, etc.).
    • Sometimes a table will be reserved for a special discussion or for Friendly Conversations.  Feel free to join in!
    • To volunteer to help with set-up +/or clean-up, please use our Contact Us Form.
    • The next session of Friendly Conversations will take place during potluck on Sunday, March 15.  The aim is to foster deeper connections and strengthen our community's ability to engage in difficult conversations in a safe and intimate setting.   The queries for this month’s conversations center on reparations:

      1.  How can we, as a meeting, move from acknowledgement of past wrongs to tangible, reparative action?

      2.  How can this work be a transformative spiritual journey for our meeting, rather than simply a financial transaction?

We look forward to embarking on this journey of deeper connection and stronger community dialogue with you!

    • Upcoming opportunities organized by the school include “The Quaker Journey” that explores the early history of Quakerism, retracing the steps of George Fox and Margaret Fell, in the beautiful Lake District of northern England.
      • The trip will occur August 2-9.
    • For more information about these and other other intentional travel and wellness programs, visit www.cfsnc.org/AdultEnrichment.
