How do we quiet our brains enough to hear the still, small voice within us? How might we deepen our experience of meeting for worship? Experiment with Light is a meditative and centering practice based upon Rex Ambler’s book Light to Live By, which describes early Quaker meditative habits and translates them into a highly accessible process of clearness and understanding. All are welcome to attend. First-time participants find the process quite easy to follow and often richly rewarding.

This is an invitation to two such sessions on two Sunday evenings a month, from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. People will listen to the prompts on their own at their own homes. The following link should work to hear the words in audio format:

https://www.experiment-with-light.org.uk/modindos.mp3 There will be a phone call or e-mail reminder at about 7:15 p.m. followed by a phone or e-mail check-in at about 8:30 p.m.

On October 21, Friends gathered to discuss chapter one of Nice Racism: How Progressive White People Perpetuate Racial Harm: “What is a Nice Racist?” On November 25, we will discuss chapter 2: “Why it’s OK to Generalize About White People.” The Nice Racism book journey is a space for white Friends to gather and support one another in a shared journey to address our complicity in white supremacist systems and internalized white supremacy, including the shame and fear many of us feel when we begin to do this work. We see anti-racism as a spiritual practice, dismantling systems of harm and moving us toward beloved community Please join us at 8:00 p.m. on Zoom.

Our goals are to equip ourselves, especially white Quakers, to look at how racism shows up even when we have positive intentions, and to support each other as we work to unlearn harmful patterns and learn liberatory practices. We hope to make the work more than just intellectual discussions. We will offer prompts for participants to notice sensations in their bodies as they read, or to notice what arises for them if and when they hear something uncomfortable, scary, upsetting, exciting, etc. There will be opportunities to share these experiences in addition to our thoughts and ideas about the book’s content.

Friends can come even if they are not able to read the chapters of the book (we will focus on roughly one chapter per month, sometimes two when necessary to keep on pace). Friends also do not need to attend every session, though the more consistency we have, the better, as trust built over time is very helpful when working with topics that call us to transformation.

The group will meet Sept 23, Oct 21, Nov 25, Dec 16, Jan 20, Feb 17, Mar 24, Apr 14, May 26, and Jun 16. As noted, you don’t have to commit to every single meeting in order to join. You can read a review of Nice Racism from BFM’s Lauren Brownlee in Friends Journal at https://www.friendsjournal.org/book/nice-racism-how-progressive-white-people-perpetuate-racial-harm/

Use our Contact Us form to get details of the training, and the Zoom link, or see your email bulletin.

        2. Concurrently, we also worship via Zoom.

Please click here for details and to ask for the Zoom link.

        • Child care for children with paid providers is available at the Meetinghouse: Toddlers-Pre-K in the CC room. K-6 in the Playground.
        • In person: At 12:15, join us for coffee hour in the Meetinghouse Library.
        • Via Zoom: Stay on the link for an after-Meeting chat at 12:15.

Youth care is available on non-holiday weekends for children over 5 years of age on non-First Day School Sundays (i.e., the 2nd, 4th and 5th Sundays of a month) during Meeting for Worship. We seek a core group who could volunteer three or four times per year. There will be a sign-up sheet at Meeting asking for two volunteers each non-First Day School Sunday. One volunteer will pair with a paid childcare provider to supervise play for the children under 5 years old. The second volunteer will pair with a paid childcare provider to supervise activities for children 5 years and older. This is an opportunity to get to know our wonderful group of children. It is also an opportunity to support parents of younger children who wish to attend Meeting for Worship. Crafts and game activities are provided. You may also sign up via a signup genius link:

Childcare is available on non-holiday weekends from 10:45 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. for children under 5 years of age. Paid caregivers will provide this service.

Please note that all children must be signed in and signed out at the child care room by their parent or caregiver. For new and visiting families, parents will be asked to fill out a very short registration form. The BFM Youth Safety Policy requires that all young people (infant to 18 years old) must be supervised by a parent, teachers, or child care staff at all times.
