How the Spirit will lead us in discernment of issues both large and small is part of the mystery that is the Religious Society of Friends. All who come to Meeting for Worship are welcome and encouraged to participate in our worshipful sharing of Meeting for Business.   First Day School (FDS) is offered on the first and third Sunday of the month. Check the weekly bulletin for updates to the schedule.

  Youth care is available on non-holiday weekends for children over 5 years of age on non-First Day School Sundays (i.e., the 2nd, 4th and 5th Sundays of a month) during Meeting for Worship. Youth care volunteers are needed for November 12. We seek a core group who could volunteer three or four times per year. There will be a sign-up sheet at Meeting asking for two volunteers each non-First Day School Sunday. One volunteer will pair with a paid childcare provider to supervise play for the children under 5 years old. The second volunteer will pair with a paid childcare provider to supervise activities for children 5 years and older. This is an opportunity to get to know our wonderful group of children. It is also an opportunity to support parents of younger children who wish to attend Meeting for Worship. Crafts and game activities are provided. You may also sign up via a signup genius link:

The BFM Youth Safety Policy requires that all young people (infant to 18 years old) must be supervised by a parent, teachers, or child care staff at all times.

• Comparative Religions: Great World Religions: Christianity

  The Comparative Religions class will start a 12-week lecture survey of Christianity from its Jewish roots to modern times by Professor Luke Timothy Johnson through The Great Courses. We meet weekly on Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom for a half-hour lecture followed by a half-hour discussion. All are welcome. You can drop in for the topics that seem interesting without committing to the whole series. The four lectures in June are: Christianity Among World Religions; Birth and Expansion; Second Century and Self Definition; and The Christian Story.

• FGC Weekly Virtual Worship for Friends of Color

  In 2018, Friends General Conference began hosting virtual worship for People of Color. FGC established this practice as a result of a request by Friends of Color who participated in a retreat that summer. During that weekend Friends of Color expressed their pain of feeling oppressed in their meeting which caused them to stop attending. These Friends were clear that Quakerism and worship was core to their lives and wanted an opportunity to continue to worship in community. FGC agreed to support these Friends by providing virtual worship on Zoom. These worship services are provided as a place for Friends of Color to come together in community and worship in an environment with Friends who experience marginalization in their lives and Quaker meetings because they are a Person of Color.

• Experiment with Light

  How do we quiet our brains enough to hear the still, small voice within us? How might we deepen our experience of meeting for worship? Experiment with Light is a meditative and centering practice based upon Rex Ambler’s book Light to Live By, which describes early Quaker meditative habits and translates them into a highly accessible process of clearness and understanding. All are welcome to attend. First-time participants find the process quite easy to follow and often richly rewarding.

  On both Sundays, people can listen to the prompts on their own in their own homes.   Continuing Revolution 2025: Queer Liberation and Spirit-Rooted Justice, June 12-14. Join the Friends Place on Capitol Hill & Pendle Hill teams for this year’s Continuing Revolution, an annual gathering of young adults (ages 18-35) to explore connections between our spiritual, political, and interpersonal lives.

  • In celebration of World Pride taking place in Washington, DC, this year’s programming is centered around the theme of queer liberation and spirit-rooted justice.
  • Participants will be invited to explore where their spiritual practice intersects with the collective pursuit for queer liberation.
  • They will leave with a sense of connection with individuals and organizations that can support and inform their role(s) in creating peace and justice in their communities and in the world.

• Juneteenth Celebrations with Scotland Community

  BFM supports the Scotland Community of Potomac and their Annual Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival that focuses on the celebration of the historic Black communities of Montgomery County.

  • Spanning six days, the 2025 Festival will have events across the County.
  • An all-day celebration will be on Thursday, June 19, with activities such as a 5-K run, community Expo, children’s carnival, exhibits at the renovated Scotland A.M.E. Zion Church in Potomac, MD, food, sports, and fireworks.
  • The mostly free activities will be held at several Bethesda, Rockville, and Cabin John locations.  To register for tickets, go to https://www.juneteenthscotland.org/schedule-of-events 

  Founded in 1880 by William Dove, a formerly enslaved farm worker who was the first Black man to own land in Potomac, Scotland was once an enclave of more than 500 acres along Seven Locks Road. The community’s only remaining historic structure, the Scotland African Methodist Episcopal Zion church, has been renovated after a catastrophic flood in 2019. Today, the Scotland community consists of 100 townhouses on 10 acres on Scotland Drive, just off Seven Locks Road. Twenty-five of these homes are still owned by descendants of the original founders of the community.

  On May 26, Friends gathered to discuss chapters 11 and 12: “How Do You Make a White Progressive a Better Racist?” and “Niceness Is Not Courageous: How to Align Your Professed Values with Your Actual Practice.” On June 16, we will look back on our journey together and discuss ways to carry this work forward.

   The Nice Racism book journey is a space for Friends to gather and support one another in a shared journey to address our complicity in white supremacist systems and internalized white supremacy, including the shame and fear many of us feel when we begin to do this work. We see anti-racism as a spiritual practice, dismantling systems of harm and moving us toward beloved community. • Experiment with Light

  How do we quiet our brains enough to hear the still, small voice within us? How might we deepen our experience of meeting for worship? Experiment with Light is a meditative and centering practice based upon Rex Ambler’s book Light to Live By, which describes early Quaker meditative habits and translates them into a highly accessible process of clearness and understanding. All are welcome to attend. First-time participants find the process quite easy to follow and often richly rewarding.

  On both Sundays, people can listen to the prompts on their own in their own homes. • Comparative Religions: Great World Religions: Christianity

  The Comparative Religions class will start a 12-week lecture survey of Christianity from its Jewish roots to modern times by Professor Luke Timothy Johnson through The Great Courses. We meet weekly on Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom for a half-hour lecture followed by a half-hour discussion. All are welcome. You can drop in for the topics that seem interesting without committing to the whole series. The four lectures in June are: Christianity Among World Religions; Birth and Expansion; Second Century and Self Definition; and The Christian Story.

  Youth care is available on non-holiday weekends for children over 5 years of age on non-First Day School Sundays (i.e., the 2nd, 4th and 5th Sundays of a month) during Meeting for Worship. We seek a core group who could volunteer three or four times per year. There will be a sign-up sheet at Meeting asking for two volunteers each non-First Day School Sunday. One volunteer will pair with a paid childcare provider to supervise play for the children under 5 years old. The second volunteer will pair with a paid childcare provider to supervise activities for children 5 years and older. This is an opportunity to get to know our wonderful group of children. It is also an opportunity to support parents of younger children who wish to attend Meeting for Worship. Crafts and game activities are provided. You may also sign up via a signup genius link:

  Childcare is available on non-holiday weekends from 10:45 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. for children under 5 years of age. Paid caregivers will provide this service.

  Please note that all children must be signed in and signed out at the child care room by their parent or caregiver. For new and visiting families, parents will be asked to fill out a very short registration form. The BFM Youth Safety Policy requires that all young people (infant to 18 years old) must be supervised by a parent, teachers, or child care staff at all times.

   The BYM Annual Session Program Committee is hard at work this winter preparing for Annual Session 2025! BYM Friends will gather from July 29 - August 3 at Hood College in Frederick, MD. Together for one week we will conduct our business, learn from one another,  enjoy fun and fellowship and practice building community in the manner of Friends. Workshop proposals are now open - and we encourage BYM Committees, Monthly Meetings, individual Friends, and Quaker organizations to share their gifts and talents.
